Why Design & Technology Is Important
Design and Technology (D&T) holds a unique position as the singular practical, hands-on, technical subject in Cyprus's national curriculum. Preserving this role is crucial, as D&T serves as a gateway to impart essential knowledge and skills in creative design, innovation, and engineering to young individuals. Unlike vocational subjects, D&T is an academic discipline with its own foundational body of knowledge, principles, and concepts not covered elsewhere in the curriculum.
Design and Technology in primary schools develops children's skills and knowledge in design, structures, mechanisms, movement control, mathematics and a range of materials. It encourages children's creativity and encourages them to think about important issues.
Secondary design and technology builds on the skills and knowledge children have already learnt at primary school. It leverages increasingly sophisticated resources, including dedicated teaching environments, manufacturing equipment and specialist teaching.
Key concepts
Students use their creativity and imagination to design and make products out of wood that solve problems in a range of contexts. They draw on the discipline of other subjects such as: mathematics, science, engineering, and art. Students learn how to take risks, become resourceful, innovative and capable citizens. They evaluate notable designs which inspire them to create their own ideas and designs.
Assessment
Through the explicit teaching of the Design skills, the pupils assess their learning continuously throughout the lesson. At the end of the unit, pupils use their Masterpiece to reflect on their knowledge and understanding. The Wood Wizards Instructors care about the depth of the students learning and the progress they have made over time.
